Siddhartha Aggarwal Sets Record as Oldest Indian to Swim English Channel Solo

  • Siddhartha Aggarwal, 49, from Bengaluru, set a new record as the oldest Indian to swim solo across the English Channel on August 29. He completed the 42 km swim in 15 hours and six minutes, overcoming challenging conditions and surpassing the previous record held by Srikaanth Viswanathan.

Kapil Parma clinches bronze in men’s -60kg J1 judo at Paris Paralympics

  • Indian judoka Kapil Parma secured a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics, defeating Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira in the men’s -60kg J1 contest on Thursday. Parma executed a decisive Ippon in just 33 seconds, sealing his victory and adding another medal to India’s tally.

Chilean tennis legend Luis Ayala Passes Away

  • Luis Ayala, a Chilean tennis great who played in two French Open finals, has died, the country’s tennis federation announced on Wednesday. He was 91.
  • Born in Santiago, Ayala was an icon of the sport in Chile as he won 46 singles titles in his career, Among his greatest achievements, he was a finalist at Roland Garros in 1958 and 1960, when he “became one of the greatest players in clay of his time,” added the federation.

Aparna Yadav appointed as vice chairperson of UP women's commission

  • The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday announced the appointment of its state women's commission office-bearers, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's sister-in-law Aparna Yadav also finding a place in the panel.
  • Governor Anandiben Patel has exercised her powers to nominate Babita Chauhan as chairperson of the UP Rajya Mahila Aayog, and Aparna Yadav and Charu Chaudhary as vice-chairpersons of the commission for a period of one year or till UP government's decision.

IIM-K & RBIH signes MOU to boost research and innovation in fintech

  • In an effort to foster research and innovation in fintech, the Laboratory for Innovation Venturing and Entrepreneurship (IIMK LIVE) of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) and the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) have signed a pact that will aim to revolutionize the FinTech sector in India. 

First Joint Commanders’ Conference commences in Lucknow

  • The maiden Joint Commanders' Conference (JCC) commenced at Lucknow on 4 September 2024, under the theme 'Sashakt and Surakshit Bharat: Transforming Armed Forces'. The conference is focused on shaping the future of India's military to adapt to the changing operational milieu. 

First International Solar Festival held in New Delhi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the first International Solar Festival, which was being held in New Delhi on 5 September 2024, from Singapore. Prime Minister Modi was on an official visit to Singapore on 4 and 5 September 2024. 

20th HACGAM Held in Incheon, South Korea

  • The Indian Coast Guard attended the 20th Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM) in Incheon, South Korea. The 20th HACGAM was hosted by the South Korean Coast Guard at Incheon, South Korea, from 2 - 6 September 2024.

Axis Bank introduces two innovative digital solutions

  • Axis Bank launches 'UPI-ATM', an integrated Android Cash Recycler with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology for cardless cash withdrawal and deposits. It also launched 'Bharat Connect (erstwhile BBPS) for Business', in partnership with NPCI's Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL). 

BOI launches 333-Day Star Dhan Vriddhi FD, offers 7.9% interest rates

  • Bank of India (BOI) has launched a fixed deposit scheme called ‘Star Dhan Vriddhi Fixed Deposit' that will have a term limit of 333 days. These revised rates are effective September 1, 2024.
  • The Star Dhan Vriddhi Fixed Deposit offers an interest rate of 7.90 per cent per annum for the so-called super senior citizens. Senior citizens can benefit from an interest rate of 7.75 per cent per annum, while the general public is offered a rate of 7.25 per cent per annum.
