A Legacy of Landmark Judgments
Justice Khanna, who has served as a Supreme Court judge since January 2019, has been central to several major rulings, such as overturning the electoral bonds scheme for political funding, endorsing the abrogation of Article 370, and advocating for the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) to prevent electoral fraud. Notably, he led the bench that granted interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, allowing him to campaign during ongoing investigations.
Judiciary Runs in the Family
Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna hails from a family deeply embedded in India’s legal system. He is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and the nephew of celebrated Supreme Court judge Justice HR Khanna. His uncle famously dissented in the ADM Jabalpur case during the Emergency, championing the protection of fundamental rights, a stance that ultimately prevented him from being appointed as Chief Justice at the time.
