PM Modi inaugurated Jammu's new railway division

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly created Jammu railway division through virtual mode on Monday (January 6) paving the way for efficient management of train services in the northernmost region of India. This milestone event comes ahead of the much-awaited inauguration of train services to Kashmir from Katra, with the final trial run scheduled for Tuesday. 

Education Minister launches Sashakt Beti, e-Drishti projects; distributes laptops & tablets

  • Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan has asserted that the government is planning to increase funds for the advancement of the educational infrastructure. He said this while inaugurating the Samarpan Samaroh at the University of Delhi today. During the event, Mr Pradhan launched the Sashakt Beti and e-Drishti projects.

Australia Clinches Border-Gavaskar Trophy Qualifies for ICC World Test Championship

  • In Test Cricket, Australia defeated India by six wickets in the fifth and final Test match in Sydney and clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, 3-1. Australia successfully chased down the target of 162 runs on Day 3. Travis Head with 34 runs and the debutant, Beau Webster with 39 runs, remained unbeaten. While for India, Prasidh Krishna took 3 wickets.
  • With this victory, Australia has also qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025. They will face South Africa in the final, which is to be held in June this year.

CSIR has developed Indigenous technology to produce Paracetamol

  • Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed an indigenous technology to produce Paracetamol, a widely used pain reliever and fever reducer drug.

Former Greek Prime Minister Simitis passes away aged 88

  • Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who ushered the country into the European Union’s single currency in 2001, passes away aged 88 at his summer house in the Peloponnese.

  • TATA AIG General Insurance Company has appointed Amit Ganorkar as its CEO and Managing Director, the company, Ganorkar, succeeded Neelesh Garg after the approval of the Board of Directors.

World Day of War Orphans

  • World Day of War Orphans is observed every year on January 6 to highlight the plight of children orphaned by wars and conflicts. The day aims to raise awareness about the trauma experienced by orphans and the social, psychological and physical obstacles they often need to overcome to lead a normal life.

 Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti

  • Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, celebrated on January 6 marks the birth anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru. He founded the Khalsa community, promoting justice, equality, and selflessness. Celebrations include Akhand Paths, kirtans, and langars, emphasizing his teachings and contributions to the Sikh faith.
  • This day is believed to have occurred on January 1, 1666, according to the Julian calendar. This date was later converted to the Gregorian calendar for contemporary observance. Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna Sahib, Bihar.

Lionel Messi: 1st Footballer to get US Presidential Medal of Freedom

  • Captain of Argentina men’s football team Lionel Messi was among the 19 people to be honored with the United States of America’s highest civilian award ‘The Presidential Medal of Freedom’ in a ceremony at the White House on 5 January 2025. However, he was not present during the ceremony due to a prior engagement, Messi became the first men’s football player and the second from the sport after female football player Megan Rapinoe, who won it in 2022.
