Mexico elects Claudia Sheinbaum as new President

  • Mexico's projected presidential winner Claudia Sheinbaum will become the first woman president in the country's 200-year history, The climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor said on Sunday night that her two competitors had called her and conceded her victory.
  • The National Electoral Institute's president said Sheinbaum had between 58.3 per cent and 60.7 per cent of the vote, according to a statistical sample. Opposition candidate Xchitl Glvez had between 26.6 per cent and 28.6 per cent of the vote and Jorge lvarez Mynez had between 9.9 per cent and 10.8 per cent of the vote. 

Adani Ports to manage Dar es Salaam Port of Tanzania for 30 years

  • The Gautam Adani-owned Adani group has entered the port business in the African country of Tanzania by securing a 30-year lease of Container Terminal 2 at the Dar es Salaam Port. An agreement was signed between the Tanzania Ports Authority and Adani International Ports Holdings Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ).
  • Recently, the Indian government-owned Indian Ports Global Ltd secured a 10-year deal to manage and operate the Shahid Beheshti terminal of Chabahar Port of Iran.

Supreme Court Reconstitutes Gender Sensitisation Committee

  • In a significant development, the Supreme Court has reconstituted Gender Sensitisation and internal complaints committee with Justice Hima Kohli to lead as the Chairperson of the Committee.
  • The committee comprises of a total of 12 members from various fields: including that of legal, Professors of Law Universities and others.
  • Senior Supreme Court judge Justice BV Nagarathna would also be a member of the committee, along with several others. The committee also consists of several senior lawyers, as per a notification issued by the Supreme Court.

Real Madrid lifts the Champions League Trophy for the 15th time

  • The Spanish football giant Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund, the German football club, 2-0 in the final to win the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. for the 15th time. This also marks the end of the European domestic professional football season 2023-24. The 2023-24 UEFA Champions League final was played at Wembley, England, on 1 June 2024. This was the third Champions League final to be hosted by Wembley Stadium, having hosted the 2011-12,2013-14 and 2023-24 editions. 

Taiwan Athletics Open: India Bag 7 Medals Including 3 Gold, 3 Silver, One Bronze

  • In the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024, the Indian contingent concluded the campaign with a remarkable medal haul, bagging seven medals including three golds, three silvers and one bronze medal.
  • In women’s Long Jump, Nayana James clinched the gold medal, registering the best jump of 6.43 metres today. Sumire Hata of Japan won the silver, while Yu Jeongmi of South Korea won the bronze medal.
  • In Men’s 800 metres, India’s Ankesh Choudhary bagged the gold, clocking 1 minute 50.63 seconds, while compatriot Somnath Chouhan won the silver medal clocking 1 minute 50.88 seconds. Hussein Lorana of Philippines won the bronze medal.
  • In Men’s pole vault, Dev Meena won the silver medal. Yong Fu Huang of Chinese Taipei also registered a leap of 5.10 metre. However, Yong won the gold medal courtesy of fewer fouls. Another Chinese Taipei athlete Huang Chen Chi took the bronze for a height of 4.80m.
  • Yesterday, DP Manu in men’s Javelin throw clinched the gold medal with the best effort of 81.58 metres. In women’s 100 metre hurdles, Nithya Ramraj bagged the silver medal with a timing of 13.23 seconds. While, Vismaya V K won the bronze in the women’s 400m race.

World Bicycle Day

  • Bicycles are a sustainable mode of transportation. They are eco-friendly and great for exercise, Every year, World Bicycle Day is observed on June 3. This year, World Bicycle Day falls on Monday.
  • The idea of celebrating World Bicycle Day was first proposed by a Polish-American social scientist Professor Leszek Sibilski who worked in the United States. He started the grassroot level campaign to get the United Nations onboard in celebrating World Bicycle Day every year. He eventually received support from Turkmenistan and 56 other countries. In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly announced that World Bicycle Day will be celebrated every year on June 3.
  • This year : 2024 the designated theme for World Bicycle Day is “Promoting Health, Equity, and Sustainability through Cycling.

India hosted 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM-46) and the 26th Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP-26)

  • India successfully hosted the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM-46) and the 26th Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP-26) in Kochi, Kerala, from May 20th to May 30th, 2024. Union Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju announced plans to establish a new Antarctic research station, Maitri-II.
  • The ATCM-46 adopted 17 revised and new management plans for Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPA) and prioritized work on the environmental impacts of sea ice change, emperor penguin protection, and biosecurity measures to minimize risks like Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
  • The meeting's theme, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (One Earth, One Family, One Future), emphasized global cooperation.
  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences, through the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), organized the event with support from the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat and other international institutions. 

BANKING AND ECONOMY

Axis Bank and Mastercard collaborate to launch NFC Soundbox

  • Axis Bank has announced the launch of NFC Soundbox in collaboration with Mastercard. The new soundbox is expected to act as an all-in-one solution allowing the users to accept Bharat QR, UPI, Tap & Pay and Tap + Pin payments.
  • With this launch, Axis Bank will be the first bank in India to introduce a Soundbox that can accept Tap + Pin payments, enabling merchants to accept transactions greater than Rs 5000 via card instruments, the bank claimed. 

Tata AIA Life launches Midcap Momentum Index Fund

  • Tata AIA Life Insurance has launched a new investment option called the Midcap Momentum Index Fund. This fund aims to invest in high-growth mid-sized companies in India. It tracks a specific list of the top 50 such companies (based on their recent performance) within a larger group of 150 mid-sized companies, The New Fund Offering (NFO) window will remain open until June 15 at a NAV of Rs. 10 per unit.
  • Midcap 150 Momentum 50 index. This index tracks the performance of the top 50 high growth companies within the Nifty Midcap 150, selected based on their Normalized Momentum Score, offering investors a chance to benefit from high-growth midcap stocks.

 Reserve Bank of India Cancels 10-Year Green Bond Auction for the First Time

  • In a first, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday cancelled the auction of 10-year green bonds as traders refused to pay greenium, said dealers. Greenium signifies the premium investors are willing to pay for green bonds because of their sustainability impact.
  • Diverging from the pattern of issuing green bonds in the latter half, the government plans to issue green bonds worth Rs 12,000 crore in the first half of the current financial year. The green bonds were planned to be issued in two tranches of Rs 6,000 crore each for a period of 10 years.
