Assam to set up new IIM near Guwahati

  • The proposal for the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Assam's capital Guwahati has been approved by the Union Education Ministry, as suggested by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The new IIM will be set up at Marabhita in Kamrup District in Assam.

ISRO and Wipro 3D partner for space exploration with 3D-printed rocket engine

  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Wipro 3D have successfully manufactured a 3D-printed rocket engine, the PS4, set to power the fourth stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). This groundbreaking achievement, lauded by Dr. V. Narayanan, Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) at ISRO, marks a paradigm shift in space manufacturing, ushering in the era of additive manufacturing for space exploration.

Virat Kohli receives ICC ODI Player of the Year 2023 award in New York

  • Veteran Indian batsman Virat Kohli received the ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year 2023 award on Saturday in New York, where he is camped out with the Men in Blue ahead of the upcoming T-20 World Cup. In a video released by the ICC, Kohli can be seen posing with the Player of the Year trophy and cap. 

India's Dinesh Karthik announces retirement from all formats of cricket

  • Days after announcing retirement from the Indian Premier League tournament, ace Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik on 1 June announced retirement from all formats of cricket. He last played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2024 Eliminator on 22 May. 

Norway Chess: Indian teenage chess sensation R Praggnanandhaa defeats world number two Fabiano Caruana

  • Indian teenage chess sensation R Praggnanandhaa made headlines in the Norway Chess competition by defeating world number two Fabiano Caruana in round five of the classical chess game on Saturday night – June 1 2024.
  • This victory follows his earlier win against world number one Magnus Carlsen in round three, marking the first time he has defeated both top players in classical chess. His impressive performance has propelled him into the top ten of the FIDE World Rankings. 

Tanvi Sharma Bags Women’s Singles Title of Bonn International Badminton Tournament

  • India’s Tanvi Sharma bagged the women’s singles title of the Bonn International Badminton Tournament, in Germany on Saturday, June 1. The young Indian shuttler defeated Wang Pei Yu of Taiwan in straight sets, 21-19, 22-20. This is the first senior title for the 15-year-old Tanvi. 

India’s D.P Manu Clinches Gold in Javelin Throw At Taiwan Athletics Open

  • India’s DP Manu and Nithya Ramraj brought home one gold and one silver medals, respectively, at the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024 on Saturday, June 1. In men’s Javelin throw, Manu clinched the gold medal with the best effort of 81.58 metres. He started the competition with a throw of 78.32. However, he secured the top spot in the competition in the sixth and final attempt, to finish with the best throw of 81.58 metres.
  • Chao Tsun Cheng of Chinese Taipei won the silver with a throw of 76.21 metres while his compatriot Chao-Hong Huang with 71.24 meters took the bronze medal.

Telangana Formation Day

  • Telangana Day, commonly known as Telangana Formation Day, is celebrated on June 2 commemorating the formation of the state Telangana - India's 28th state, It was founded on 2nd June 2014.
  • In 1956, the Hyderabad State was dissolved—and its Telugu speaking region Telangana was merged with the Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. A peasant-driven movement began to advocate for separation from Andhra Pradesh starting in the early 1950s, and continued until Telangana was formed, on 2 June 2014.
