Australian Open: Jannik Sinner of Italy clinches Men’s singles title

  • In the Australian Open Tennis, World No. 1, Italy’s Jannik Sinner won the men’s singles title. In the final, he defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 at Rod Laver Arena.
  • With his triumph, the 23-year-old Italian became the youngest man to win multiple Australian Open titles since Jim Courier in 1992-93. This is Sinner’s third major title in his third Grand Slam final. 

Indian Grandmaster Iniyan Wins Malaysian Title

  • Indian Grandmaster Iniyan Panneerselvam showcased an exceptional performance to win the 9th Johor International Open Chess Tournament in Malaysia. The 22-year-old, hailing from Erode, Tamil Nadu, dominated the event, finishing 1.5 points ahead of his closest rival. His victory adds to his earlier triumph at the Chennai Open in January, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in chess. 

Odisha Warriors crowned inaugural champions of Women’s Hockey India League

  • In the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL), Odisha Warriors lifted the inaugural edition title after they registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory over JSW Soorma Hockey Club in the Final at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi.

Dr. KM Cherian Passes Away

  • KM Cherian, a world-renowned cardiologist for over 50 years passed away at Bengaluru. The 82-year-old Cardiologist reportedly collapsed while attending a wedding, He had recently launched his biography in Kerala. Among many credits, was his first heart-lung transplant on a patient in India.

139 distinguished personalities were selected for this year’s Padma Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu has approved the conferment of 139 Padma Awards for the Year 2025. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards.
  • 23 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 13 Posthumous awardees.
  • Indian writer MT Vasudevan Nair, former chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Osamu Suzuki, and singer Sharda Sinha have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.

THE World Subject Rankings 2025: IISc Bengaluru features in the global top 100

  • THE World Subject Rankings 2025: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bengaluru) is the first Indian institution to rank in the top 100 worldwide for computer science, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) subject-wise ranking 2025. IISc has secured the 96th spot in the World University Rankings.

PNB Pioneers Real-Time Cybercrime Response with Clari5 Integration

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) has become the first Indian bank to implement Clari5’s National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) Integration Solution, marking a significant advancement in fraud prevention and complaint management. This state-of-the-art system, developed in collaboration with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), enables automated, real-time processing of cybercrime complaints across all retail banking channels, including Internet and Mobile Banking, ATMs, UPI, and NEFT/RTGS.

RBI penalises J&K Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank

  • Reserve Bank has penalised Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Bank of India, and Canara Bank for deficiencies in regulatory compliance.
  • Jammu and Kashmir Bank has been penalised Rs 3.31 crore for contravention of certain norms related to financial inclusion - access to banking Services - Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA)’, ‘Know Your Customer’ and ‘Loans and Advances - Statutory and Other Restrictions’.
  • In another release, the RBI said Rs 1 crore penalty has been imposed on the Bank of India for non-compliance with certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
