Maia Sandu Sworn in as President of Moldova for 2nd Term

• Ms Maia Sandu has been sworn in as the President of the European country of Moldova for her second term of four years on 24 December 2024, Ms Maia Sandu first became the President of Moldova in 2020. She is the first woman to become the President of the country after it gained Independence in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

 US Declare Bald Eagle as National Bird

• On Christmas Eve 2024, President Joe Biden signed a historic law officially designating the bald eagle as the national bird of the United States, Although Bald eagle has appeared on the seal since 1782, symbolizing strength and freedom.

 SLINEX 2024 India Sri-Lanka Naval Drill in Visakhapatnam

• The bilateral Naval exercise between India and Sri Lanka, SLINEX 24 (Sri Lanka - India Exercise 2024) was conducted from 17 - 20 Dec 24 at Visakhapatnam under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command in two phases. The harbour phase was held from 17 - 18 Dec 24 and the sea phase from 19 - 20 Dec 24. 

China approves construction of the world’s largest dam on Yarlung Tsangpo River

• In what could be a significant cause of concern for India, China has reportedly approved what would be the world’s largest hydroelectric project on Tibet’s longest river Yarlung Tsangpo. The world’s largest hydropower dam with an estimated cost of 1 trillion yuan (US$137 billion) would be built in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which becomes Siang in India’s Arunachal Pradesh. The river becomes the Brahmaputra River after it merges with two other rivers in Assam.

Rajnath Singh and Yogi Adityanath Unveil Atal Ji’s Statue

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the statue of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Kudiya Ghat along the banks of Gomti in the state capital. 

Gensol Engineering bags solar project contract from NTPC REL

• Gensol Engineering has secured a Rs 897-core contract from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) for the development of 225 MW grid-connected solar projects.
• The project is to be developed in EPC mode at GSECL Solar Park (Stage-III), Khavda located in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. 

Mankind Pharma inks pact with Innovent for immunotherapy drug in India

• Domestic drug maker Mankind Pharma has agreed with Chinese pharma major Innovent Biologics to sell its anti-cancer drug Sintilimab in India under a licence. 

OBITUARY

Former PM Manmohan Singh passes away

• Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh passed away in New Delhi last night. He was 92. Dr Singh breathed his last at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He was admitted to the Emergency ward of AIIMS around 8 PM in a critical condition.
