Sri Lanka picks Marxist-leaning Dissanayake as President

  • Sri Lanka elected Marxist-leaning Anura Kumara Dissanayake as its new president, putting faith in the 55-year-old’s pledge to fight corruption and bolster a fragile economic recovery following its worst financial crisis in decades. 

India - United States groundbreaking partnership aimed at clean energy manufacturing

  • India and United States have entered into a ground breaking partnership aimed at boosting clean energy manufacturing, The funding would be done through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), It would support supply-side manufacturing capacity expansion for key technology verticals, focusing on solar, wind, battery, energy grid systems, and high-efficiency air conditioner and ceiling fans. 

India and Bhutan Deepen Cooperation in the field of Food Safety

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, held a bilateral meeting with the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) during the Global Food Regulators Summit at Bharat Mandapam. The meeting focused on implementing the “Agreement” signed on March 21, 2024, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan.

Mizoram government launches Bana Kaih scheme

  • The Mizoram government launched a financial assistance and support programme, 'Bana Kaih', for small entrepreneurs and farmers of the state, Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the scheme at a function at the Vanapa Hall in Aizawl.

India won double gold at Chess Olympiad 2024

  • India’s teams delivered outstanding performances at the 45th International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad, held in Budapest, clinching gold in both the men’s and women’s events. India won the gold in both the open and women’s categories.
  • India’s men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, defeated Slovenia to clinch the gold, and The Indian women’s team, featuring Harika Dronavalli, R. Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev, mirrored the men’s success by securing gold after a dominant 3.5-0.5 victory against Azerbaijan. Harika, Divya, and Vantika won their matches, with Vaishali earning a draw. 

Lando Norris Wins Singapore Grand Prix 2024

  • Lando Norris of McLaren secures his third career victory in Formula 1 by winning the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, September 22, 2024. This year’s Singapore Grand Prix broke new ground by being the first in the event’s history to run without a safety car deployment. This unusual circumstance added an extra layer of challenge for the drivers, who had to maintain focus throughout without the usual breaks in racing action that safety car periods provide.

  • International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf. The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.

Jana Small Finance Bank launches Liquid Plus FD schemes at 6.75% interest rate

  • Jana Small Finance Bank has floated a new FD scheme -- Liquid Plus Fixed Deposit -- at an interest rate of 6.75% per annum for tenures ranging from 7 to 180 days. The rate is applicable to a minimum deposit of Rs 10 lakhs for retail deposits up to Rs 3 crore, and for bulk deposits between Rs 3 crores and Rs 200 crores per customer for a short period of time.
