JD Vance takes oath as US Vice President

• Usha Vance became the first Indian-American and Hindu Second Lady after her husband J.D. Vance was sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the US. 

Donald Trump Takes Oath as 47th President of United States   

• Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, taking the oath of office for his second term. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC, Cannons were fired in salute as Hail to the Chief played. JD Vance took the oath as Vice President, administered by Justice Brett Kavanaugh. At 40, Vance became the 50th vice president and the third youngest in US history.

Uttarakhand Clears Uniform Civil Code Rules

• Uttarakhand is set to become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), as the state government has approved the UCC rules manual.
• UCC law includes seven schedules and 392 sections, addressing critical issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships. It aims to eliminate practices like polygamy, polyandry, Halala, Iddat, and Talaaq. 

Southern India Science Fair 2025 to begin in Puducherry

• Showcasing the best of science and technology from South Indian schools, the Southern India Science Fair 2025 is set to kick off today (January 21) in Puducherry at the Old Port Ground, Goubert Avenue. Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan will inaugurate the fair in the presence of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Legislative Assembly Speaker Selvam R and Education Minister A. Namassivayam.

Karnataka Clinch Vijay Hazare Trophy for Record 5^th Time

• In the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2024-25 final, Karnataka emerged victorious by 36 runs against Vidarbha on January 19, 2025, at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. This win marks Karnataka’s fifth Vijay Hazare Trophy title. The thrilling encounter saw Karnataka posting a commanding total and defending it successfully, despite a spirited fight from Vidarbha’s batters. 

OBITUARY

Denis Law Passed Away

• Manchester United legend and Ballon d’Or winner Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84, the Premier League club announced on Friday, January 18. Law had revealed in 2021 that he was battling with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.

RBI asks banks to use special number series to prevent fraud

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated that banks and other regulated entities (REs) utilize the ‘1600xx’ numbering series exclusively for transactional calls to customers. For promotional communications, the ‘140xx’ series should be employed. This directive aims to enhance the security of digital transactions and protect customers from fraudulent activities.
