OBITUARY
Sports Journalist Harpal Singh Bedi Passed Away
- Harpal Singh Bedi, a respected journalist known for his sharp reporting and engrossing narrative, has passed away, leaving a void in the world of Indian sports media. JNU alumni Bedi made a lasting impression on the pitch with his special combination of friendly, approachable demeanor and razor-sharp journalistic instincts.
- Following a protracted illness, he passed away at the age of 72 on the morning of June 15, Saturday, in New Delhi Hospital. At the green park crematorium, he was cremated in front of a large gathering of family, colleagues, friends, especially external affairs minister S Jaishankar.
Former Odisha Guv Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare Passed Away
- Former Odisha Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare passed away on June 15. He was 95. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and former CM Naveen Patnaik have expressed their deep sorrow over the demise of the veteran politician.
- Bhandare was a senior Congress leader from Maharashtra and a former Rajya Sabha member for three terms. He also practised as a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and served as Governor of Odisha from August 2007 to March 2013.

Sustainable Gastronomy Day
- Sustainable Gastronomy Day is observed every year on 18 June, a day to promote sustainable practices in the world of gastronomy, or the art and study of food and cuisine.
- About - Gastronomy is sometimes called the art of food. It can also refer to a style of cooking from a particular region. In other words, gastronomy often refers to local food and cuisine. Sustainability is the idea that something (e.g. agriculture, fishing or even preparation of food) is done in a way that is not wasteful of our natural resources and can be continued into the future without being detrimental to our environment or health.
- Sustainable gastronomy, therefore, means cuisine that takes into account where the ingredients are from, how the food is grown and how it gets to our markets and eventually to our plates.
SUMMITS & MOU's
MEA and SBI Sign MoU to Enhance Digital Payments for Migrant Workers via eMigrate Portal
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is entered into between Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, and State Bank of India to provide an additional digital payment services of the SBI through payment gateway called SBIePay to Indian migrant workers, Recruiting Agents (RAs) and other users of the eMigrate portal.
- The MoU was signed by Shri Bramha Kumar, Joint Secretary (OE & PGE) on behalf of the Ministry and Shri Neelesh Dwivedi, General Manager (NW-I) from the SBI at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, Chankyapuri, New Delhi, and will be operational soon after successful integration of SBIePay with eMigrate portal.

Global Peace Index 2024: India ranked 116, and more
- According to the 18th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2024 released by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), India is ranked 116th out of 163 countries, climbing 10 positions from 2023. The list is topped by Iceland since 2008 followed by Ireland (2nd), Austria (3rd), New Zealand (4th), and Singapore (5th).
- The Global Peace Index (GPI) published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), provides a comprehensive measure of global peacefulness, evaluating 163 independent states and territories. This report highlights the trends, results, and economic impacts of violence across the world, offering valuable insights into the current state of peace and the factors influencing it.
Mumbai retains top spot as India's most expensive city :Mercer report
- The Indian economy has been resilient compared to many other major economies. It has experienced significant growth, primarily driven by domestic demand and a thriving services sector, the report said.
- Mumbai remains the most expensive Indian city for expatriates to live in, while Hong Kong tops the global ranks yet again, according to a survey by HR consultancy Mercer.
- India’s financial capital has moved up 11 spots since 2023 to rank 136th globally, Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living Survey found.
- The report ranked 226 cities based on the cost of more than 200 items, including transportation, food, clothing, and entertainment. Singapore came in second followed by the Swiss city of Zurich in third place.
BANKING AND ECONOMY
RBI cancels licence of Purvanchal Co-op Bank
- The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the licence of Purvanchal Co-operative Bank, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh as it does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
- The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Uttar Pradesh has also been asked to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator, the RBI said in a statement.
RBI imposes 1.45 crore fine on Central Bank of India, 96.4 lakh fine on Bangladesh's Sonali Bank
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a fine of ₹1.45 crore on the Central Bank of India and ₹96.4 lakh on Sonali Bank PLC for non-compliance issues including loans and advances and Know Your Customer (KYC) norms.
- Central Bank of India’s Penalty - Central Bank of India incurred a ₹1.45 crore penalty for issues identified during a Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2022). The violations included sanctioning a loan against government subsidies and delays in crediting customers for unauthorized electronic transactions.
- Sonali Bank PLC’s Penalty - Sonali Bank PLC, part of Bangladesh’s commercial banking sector, received a ₹96.4 lakh penalty for failing to adhere to KYC norms outlined by the RBI. The penalty underscores RBI’s focus on ensuring robust compliance standards across all banking operations.
