Japan-India Maritime Exercise Commences at Yokosuka

  • Japan-India maritime exercise (Jimex 24) commenced at Yokosuka in Japan. According to the Indian Navy, during the exercise, navies of both the countries will jointly hone their war fighting skills at sea and enhance their interoperability.
  • Indian Navy’s indigenous Stealth Frigate INS Shivalik is participating in the bilateral maritime exercise. While, Japan is being represented by the Guided Missile Destroyer JS Yugiri. Indian Navy said that JIMEX 24 provides an opportunity to learn from each other’s best practices and facilitates operational interactions between India and Japan. The exercise also reaffirms their shared commitment towards maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

GAIL to Set Up India’s Largest Ethane Cracker Project with Rs 60,000 Crore Investment in MP

  • GAIL, the country's top gas supplier, has announced that it intends to set up 1500 KTA ethane cracker project at Ashta, district Sehore in Madhya Pradesh, having product slate of various ethylene derivatives. GAIL said that the project will entail projected investment of Rs 60,000 crore.
  • In an exchange filing, the company said that it has submitted its request to the Madhya Pradesh government for the for providing suitable enablers for the project.
  • Around 800 hectares of land shall be provided by the MP Industrial Development Corporation Limited, for which state government has already initiated the process. Investment approval from GAIL's Board shall be sought after favourable outcome on enablers."

Puja Tomar becomes first Indian to win in UFC

  • India's Puja Tomar scripted history as she became the first mixed martial arts fighter from the country to win a bout at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in UFC Louisville here.
  • Debutant Tomar eked out a 30-27, 27-30, 29-28 split-decision win over Brazil's Rayanne dos Santos in the straw-weight (52kg) bout. 

UP to host 2025 Edition of the MotoGP Bharat in Noida

  • The Uttar Pradesh government officials said the state will sign a contract with Spain headquartered Dorna Sports and its Indian partner, Fairstreet Sports, to organise MotoGP event in Noida next year, and will keep organising the annual event till 2029.
  • In order to organise the event through its Invest UP department, the state government will raise ₹80 crore to cover Dorna Sports’ one-year licensing fee. 

India to host 2025 FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup

  • India will host the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup in December 2025, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced.
  • The tournament, set to feature 24 teams for the first time, will be the 14th edition of the Junior Hockey World Cup. The host city will be announced later.

Mumbai Cricket Association President Amol Kale Passes Away

  • Mumbai Cricket Association president Amol Kale has passed away due to cardiac arrest in New York, Kale had travelled to United States and watched the India vs Pakistan match live from the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium along with MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik and apex council member Suraj Samat on Sunday.

Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi Appointed as Next Chief Of Army Staff

  • Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will take charge from 30th of this month. The present Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj C Pande will demit office on 30th June.
  • Born on 1st July 1964, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu and Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on 15th December 1984. During his long and distinguished service spanning nearly 40 years. 

Mohan Charan Majhi Named New Chief Minister of Odisha

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Mohan Charan Majhi has been chosen as the new chief minister of Odisha. Majhi was also elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Odisha. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida were selected as deputy chief ministers of the state.
  • The announcement was made by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Odisha's capital city Bhubaneswar. Apart from Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav attended the meeting as a central observer.

World Day Against Child Labour

  • World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12. Its goal is to catalyze the expanding global movement against child labour, The International Labour Organisation (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002, as part of its ongoing efforts to eliminate child labour,
  • The theme for World Day Against Child Labour 2024 is – Let's act on our commitments: End Child Labour! the World Day Against Child Labour is a significant global event aimed at raising awareness and mobilising efforts to end child labour in all its forms.

India Slips in Global Gender Gap Index, Ranks 129, and more

  • According to the Global Gender Gap Index released by the World Economic Forum, India has slipped two places to the 129th position, while Iceland retained its top spot. Within South Asia, India ranked fifth after Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, with Pakistan ranked last.
  • Despite the drop, India showed strong gender parity in secondary education enrollment and political empowerment, securing the 10th position for the number of years with female/male heads of state in the last 50 years. However, India’s overall gender gap closure stands at 64.1 per cent in 2024, a slight decline from 64.2 per cent last year.
