Peru and Slovakia sign the Artemis Accords for peaceful moon exploration

  • NASA held a ceremony at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.to host representatives from both Slovakia and Peru. During the event, both countries signed the agency's Artemis Accords, a set of principles that aims to lay out a framework for peaceful cooperation in space and on the moon.
  • The addition of these two nations brings the total of signing countries to 42. The Artemis Accords were first launched and signed in October 2020 by eight nations, including the United States. 

Bangladesh to Import Hydro-Electricity from Bhutan, and more

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her country’s eagerness to import hydro-electricity from Bhutan through India when Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay met her in New Delhi.
  • Bangladesh Prime Minister and her Bhutanese counterpart were in New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a media briefing after the meeting, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said that import of hydroelectricity from Bhutan will require a tripartite agreement involving India and we have already brought the matter to India’s attention. 

European Commission Excludes Tanzania from Conservation Grant

  • The European Commission (EC) has made a significant decision regarding Tanzania’s eligibility for a conservation grant under its NaturAfrica initiative. This decision has implications for conservation efforts in East Africa, particularly concerning the Eastern Rift Savannahs and Watersheds (ERiSaWa)
  • On June 5, 2024, the EC uploaded ‘CORRIGENDUM NO 4’ on its ‘EU Funding & Tenders Portal,’ announcing the removal of Tanzania from the list of countries eligible for its 18 million Euro conservation grant. This grant is aimed at the ERiSaWa component, focusing on two Key Landscapes for Conservation and Development (KLCDs) of high biodiversity importance.

Haryana sets up NRI grievance redressal cell

  • Haryana government has set up an NRI grievance redressal cell for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), especially of Haryana origin, to address their issues and complaints under a single roof, The cell will function from Haryana Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh.
  • Headed by a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), this cell focuses on addressing complaints from NRIs. It ensures prompt resolution of grievances and has field units in every police district for easier accessibility. NRIs can reach out through a dedicated helpline number and email provided by the government. 

Narendra Modi sworn in for a historic third time as Prime Minister of India

  • Narendra Damadordas Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time by President Draupadi Murmu on 9 June 2024. He was administered the oath of office of secrecy by President Draupadi Murmu in a simple ceremony in the Rastrapathi Bhawan in New Delhi. He is the second person after Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru to be sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time.
  • Along with the Prime Minister, 71 ministers - 30 cabinet ministers and 41 ministers of state, five with independent charge, were also administered the oath of office by President Murmu.

Magnus Carlsen and Ju Wenjun win Norway Chess 2024 title

  • Magnus Carlsen won his sixth Norway Chess title after a year break, while Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun emerged victorious in the inaugural women's event.
  • The 12th edition of this prestigious competition took place in Stavanger, Norway, from May 27 to June 7. Both tournaments were 6-player double-round robins with equal prize funds.
  • Each round consisted of a classical game with a win worth 3 points and a loss - 0. In the case of a draw, the players played an Armageddon game, where the winner scored 1½ points, and the loser got just 1 point, with a draw favoring Black. 

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz Garfia won Men’s Singles Title at French Open in Paris

  • In Tennis, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz Garfia grabbed his first-ever French Open Men’s singles title at the Roland Garros in Paris last night. Alcaraz triumphed over Alexander Zverev of Germany in the final, 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, and 6-2.
  • Alcaraz has now won more Grand Slams at the age of just 21, than every man born in the 1990s combined. The Spaniard also became the second youngest player in the Open era to claim a major title on all three surfaces, Alcaraz entered the final beating Jannik Sinner, while Zverev secured his place in the final by overcoming Casper Ruud.

ISRO announces Indo-French Thermal Imaging Mission - TRISHNA  

  • TRISHNA (Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment) mission is a collaborative endeavor between ISRO and CNES (French Space Agency) to monitor surface temperature and water management at regional to global scale.
  • Objective: Detailed monitoring of energy and water budgets of continental biosphere for quantifying terrestrial water stress and water use and high-resolution observation of water quality and dynamics.
  • It will also help in a comprehensive assessment of urban heat islands, detection of thermal anomalies linked to volcanic activity and geothermal resources, etc.

Raj Priy Singh Appointed ss Director in Department of Rural Development

  • Raj Priy Singh, an Indian Forest Service (IFoS) officer from the 2010 batch, has been appointed as the Director in the Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Rural Development. His appointment follows a recommendation for Central deputation by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and is governed by the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS).
  • Raj Priy Singh's appointment as Director in the Department of Rural Development is under the Central Staffing Scheme for five years, effective from the date he assumes charge of the post or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. 

BANKING AND ECONOMY

India Exim Bank Opens Nairobi Office to Boost East Africa Trade

  • Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim Bank) inaugurated the East Africa Representative Office in Nairobi, Kenya in the gracious presence of H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Republic of Kenya; Dr. Vivek Joshi, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India; H.E. Ms. Namgya C. Khampa, High Commissioner of India to Kenya; and Ms. Harsha Bangari, Managing Director, India Exim Bank.
  • Merchandise trade between India and East Africa has shown significant growth in the last decade, growing from US$ 9.7 billion in 2013 to reach US$ 12.9 billion in 2022. India’s exports to the East Africa which were at US$ 8.6 billion in 2013 increased to US$ 9.4 billion in 2022.
