B.Tech in Design by IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi announced yesterday, 25th July, 2024, that they are introducing a new Bachelor of Technology in Design program aimed at design aspirants.

The Department of Design, which will launch the course in the upcoming academic session, will select students based on their JEE (Advanced) scores and UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) scores.

According to the X (formerly, twitter) post,  IIT Bombay stated that "this is a unique program (B.Tech in Design) crafted especially for empathetic and creative minds intent on understanding socio-technical systems around them and designing solutions for the wicked problems in these systems."

According to the notification, The B.Tech in Design programme at IIT Delhi will have a strong focus on product design. "The aim is to prepare the students in such a way that at the end of the programme they are confident in using design as a vehicle to address problems in industry and society." the notice read.

The B.Des. program already offered by IIT Delhi is a Bachelors programme with a strong disciplinary focus open to UCEED qualified students of all areas (including arts, commerce etc.).

However, the B.Tech. in Design is a broad program that mixes different areas of study, similar to other engineering programs offered by the institute and requires candidates to clear the JEE Advanced exam for admission.

B.Tech in Design Course Details

According to the press release, the B.Tech in Design is a four year program. The curriculum will cover technologies, systematic design thinking processes, research methods for analysing socio-technical systems, communication and presentation skills, and teamwork.

The program will include a mix of courses. About half will focus on core design subjects, while the other half will cover topics from various fields across the institute.

Prof. Jyoti Kumar, HoD, Department of Design stated that, "the expectation is that after graduation students will take up leadership positions in industry, academia, government, consulting and entrepreneurship."

Prof. Jyoti Kumar also added that the programme offers enough choices and freedom to students to exercise diverse career paths.
