Shortlisting for Analytical Writing Test (AWT) & Personal Interview (PI) in IIM Ahmedabad Admission Criteria

Stage 1: From the Applicants’ pool: Selection of exceptional performers across different disciplines

  • IIM Ahmedabad admission criteria is designed to identify right candidates based on their academic achievements and their performance in the CAT exam, while ensuring diversity in academic backgrounds.
  • To achieve this, top candidates from each academic discipline will be shortlisted for the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) based on their Composite Score (CS), provided they meet specific requirements.
  • As per the official website of IIM Ahmedabad admission criteria, a specific method is used to shortlist candidates for the AWT and PI.
  • This method applies to each Academic Category (AC) that has at least 100 applicants appearing for the CAT-2023 exam from reserved categories such as SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), NC-OBC (Non-Creamy Other Backward Classes), and PwD (Persons with Disabilities).
  • Here's how it works: Within each AC, the top 5% of candidates - considering only those in their respective reservation categories (General, SC, ST, NC-OBC, PwD) - will be shortlisted for the next rounds.
  • This selection is based on their composite score (CS), which is further explained in the admission criteria. However, there are upper limits to the number of candidates that can be shortlisted in each AC, as detailed in the given below table.

Table: The upper limits (UL) on the number of candidates to be shortlisted per RC for AC-1, AC-2, AC-3, AC-5

Category Upper Limit (UL)

In the context of evaluating academic performance, we have set specific criteria that students need to meet. These criteria are defined as follows:

Criterion 1 (C1): To meet this criterion, students must ensure that their performance in key assessments, such as PVARC, PDILR, PQA, and PT, meets or exceeds the minimum thresholds outlined in another table below.

Criterion 2 (C2): For this criterion, it is essential that students attain a minimum score, which is specific to their category and academic stream. This score is denoted as "P" and is calculated as the average of the percentages obtained in their 10th and 12th standard examinations.

Minimum cut-off for P across different disciplines and different categories:

Criterion 3 (C3): (Percentage of marks in the bachelor’s examination) In order to be eligible for admission, candidates must achieve a minimum percentage of marks in their bachelor's examination. This minimum cut-off percentage is determined based on the 80th percentile of the percentage of marks obtained by applicants belonging to their respective ACRC group. The ACRC group refers to the category of candidates who appeared for the CAT-2023 exam, applied to IIM Ahmedabad, and belong to the same specific category.

The Final Selection

In this stage, candidates will be selected based on their 'Final Composite Scores' (FCS), which have been separately shortlisted for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD).

The selection process ensures that the number of candidates chosen in each reservation category aligns with the legal requirements.

The FCS of a candidate who appears in AWT & PI will be computed as follows:

FCS PIF * = Normalized PI Score + AWTF * Normalized AWT Score + CATF_FCS * Normalized CAT Score + ARF_FCS * AR
