The Road to Judiciary: A Tough Decision

From NLSIU to Corporate Law

Graduating from NLSIU (National Law School of India University), one of India’s top law schools, usually means a secure, high-paying corporate job. That’s precisely what Prithvi did—he joined a corporate law firm right after graduation.

However, he realized corporate law wasn’t for him within a month. He didn’t enjoy the work, and he didn’t see himself continuing in that field for long. But what next?

This was when his mother played a crucial role. In July 2021, she informed him about a judiciary exam notification, encouraging him to give it a shot. He took a bold step—quit his job in August 2021 and started preparing for the Judiciary exams.

Overcoming Doubts: Leaving a Well-Paying Job

Leaving a corporate job and stepping into the uncertain world of competitive exams is never easy. Judiciary exams are highly competitive, with multiple stages—Prelims, Mains, and Interviews.

So, how did he convince himself to take this risk?

  • Confidence in his abilities: He believed that he could crack the exam with the right preparation.
  • Family Support: His family trusted his decision, which gave him the courage to move forward.
  • Commitment to a larger goal: He realized that the Judiciary aligned better with his values and interests than corporate law.

Judiciary Exam Preparation: Strategy & Challenges

Step 1: Choosing the Right States

Prithvi emphasizes the importance of strategically selecting states while preparing for Judiciary exams.

  • Rajasthan Judiciary Exam – A straightforward exam with a relatively stable syllabus.
  • Haryana Judiciary Exam – Requires strong Hindi language skills (100 marks in Mains), making it a major challenge.
  • Delhi Judiciary Exam – The pattern changed significantly this year, making it even more unpredictable.

Each state has a different pattern and difficulty level. Instead of preparing for every state, he targeted the ones where he had the best chance of success.

Step 2: Cracking Prelims, Mains & Interviews

  • Prelims: Focused on fundamentals and accuracy.
  • Mains: Practiced answer writing and ensured clarity in legal concepts.
  • Interviews: Worked on presentation, confidence, and legal knowledge.

Each state posed different challenges, but with dedicated preparation, he cleared all three exams.

The Moment of Success: Becoming a Judge

His first success came when he cleared the Rajasthan Judiciary Exam in August.
Then, he cleared the Haryana Judiciary Exam and appeared for the Delhi Judiciary Interview.

Delhi Judiciary Exam results took longer than expected, adding to his anxiety. He considered it his last option before restarting his preparation.

Finally, on March 24 at 9:30 PM, the Delhi Judiciary results were declared—he had made it! 🎉

The first thing he did? He celebrated with his family, because their support and belief played a crucial role in his journey.

Selecting the Right States

Not all Judiciary exams are the same. Each state has a different syllabus, paper pattern, and difficulty level.

  • Do your research: Choose states based on vacancies, syllabus, and personal strengths.
  • Avoid unnecessary burden: Don’t prepare for too many states at once—focus on a few where you have the best chances.
  • Consider syllabus difficulty level: Some states like Haryana have an extensive syllabus (including Hindi language), while Rajasthan is relatively straightforward.

Preparing for Prelims

The Preliminary exam is the first and most crucial stage of the Judiciary selection process.

Prelims Preparation Strategy:

  • Revise Bare Acts regularly (focus on key sections).
  • Understand legal concepts clearly—don’t rely on rote learning.
  • Solve previous years’ question papers to understand the exam pattern.
  • Mock tests are essential—they improve speed, accuracy, and time management.

Cracking Mains

Unlike Prelims, the Mains Exam requires detailed answer writing, legal analysis, and structured responses.

Mains Preparation Strategy:

  • Answer writing practice: Start writing long-form answers to improve clarity and legal reasoning.
  • Master language subjects: Some states (e.g., Haryana) have a Hindi language paper that plays a crucial role in selection.
  • Focus on judgments and case laws: Mentioning landmark judgments in your answers adds credibility.
  • Time Management: Write structured answers—introduction, explanation, case laws, and conclusion.

Preparing for the Interview

The interview stage can be unpredictable. Even top candidates can struggle if they lack confidence or clarity.

Interview Preparation Strategy:

  • Be thorough with your legal subjects—revise laws, landmark cases, and current legal developments.
  • Practice speaking confidently—mock interviews help in reducing nervousness.
  • Prepare for personal questions—be ready to explain your motivation for joining the judiciary.
  • Stay calm & composed—interviewers assess your analytical skills, temperament, and decision-making.
