Veteran lawmaker Ishiba set to become Japan new PM

  • Former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to become Japan’s next prime minister after winning a closely fought contest in his fifth and final attempt to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, The 67-year-old prevailed over hardline nationalist Sanae Takaichi in a run-off vote in what was one of the most unpredictable leadership elections in decades with a record nine candidates in the field.

India to host WTSA 2024 and more

  • India is set to host the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) in October 2024, a landmark event in global telecom, marking the first time this critical International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conference will be held in the country. In preparation, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a series of WTSA 2024 outreach sessions in major cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, to engage students and foster discussions on the future of global communications. 

Droupadi Murmu to inaugurate 8-day Bharatiya Kala Mahotsav in Telangana and more

  • President Droupadi Murmu will be on a day-long visit to Telangana today (September 28), during her stay, the President will grace the 21st convocation of NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad. She will also inaugurate the Bharatiya Kala Mahotsav at Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad. The eight-day-long Kala Mahotsav will showcase the art, culture, crafts, and culinary diversity of the North Eastern states. 

Delhi Initiates Dust-Free Drive amidst Political Tensions

  • Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has directed civic agencies to embark on a Dust-Free Delhi Drive over the next week, with an aim to extend it for a year. The Aam Aadmi Party claims that Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had already proposed a similar initiative previously. 

Nitin Gadkari is set to inaugurate the Oxygen Bird Park

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Sh. Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate Oxygen Bird Park (Amrit Mahotsav Park) along the Nagpur-Hyderabad National Highway-44 today (September 28) in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Dwayne Bravo Announces Retirement from Cricket

  • Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has retired from all forms of cricket after a groin injury curtailed the final season of his career. The 40-year-old, the leading T20 wicket-taker in history, had planned to retire at the end of the current Caribbean Premier League campaign.

World Rabies Day

  • World Rabies Day, observed on 28 September is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the United States.
  • Theme - This year’s World Rabies Day theme “Breaking Rabies Boundaries”. focuses attention on the actions needed to overcome persistent challenges and make strides towards rabies elimination. 

International Day for Universal Access to Information

  • International Day for Universal Access to Information held on 28 September every year was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly, Initially the day was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016 

RANKING

India ranks 39th in GII 2024; Switzerland leads for 14th consecutive year

  • India secured the 39th position out of a total of 133 economies with a score of 38.3 in the recently released Global Innovative Index (GII) 2024 — a slight improvement of one rank from last year when the country was placed at the 40th rank with a score of 38.1, Meanwhile, Switzerland secured the first rank with a score of 67.5 for the 14th consecutive year.

SEBI Launches FPI Outreach Cell

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a dedicated Foreign Portfolio Investor Outreach Cell as part of the Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD), The FPI Outreach Cell will support FPIs in accessing Indian securities market seamlessly.
