Detailed CUET Biology/Biological Studies/Biotechnology/ Biochemistry Syllabus 2025

Note: There will be one Question Paper with 50 questions, of which 40 must be attempted.

Unit I: Reproduction

The CUET exam analysis for biology shows that this unit's difficulty level has increased. Around 13 questions were asked in the 2024 Biology exam, making it one of the high-weightage units in the CUET Biology Syllabus. 

  • Reproduction in organisms: Reproduction, a defining property of organisms for species survival; Asexual and sexual reproduction; asexual reproduction. Binary fission, sporulation, budding, gemmule, and fragmentation; vegetative propagation of plants.
  • Reproduction sexual in blooming plants: Development of male and female gametophytes; Flower structure Pollination - kinds, agencies, and illustrations; Outbreeding tools; Pollen-Pistil relationship; Double fertilisation; Post-fertilization events – endosperm and embryo development, seed development, and fruit creation; Special reproduction modes - apomixis, parthenocarpy, and polyembryony; Significance of seed and fruit formation.
  • Reproduction in humans: male and female reproductive systems; Microanatomy of the testis and ovaries; Gametogenesis-spermatogenesis and oogenesis; Menstrual cycle; Fertilization, embryo development up to blastocyst formation and implantation; Pregnancy and placenta development (fundamental concept); Parturition (Elementary idea); Lactation (Elementary idea).
  • Reproductive health: Necessity of reproductive health and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STD); Birth control- Necessity and Methods, Contraception and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP); Amniocentesis; Infertility and assisted reproductive technologies – IVF, ZIFT, GIFT (Elementary idea for general awareness).

Unit II: Genetics and Evolution

This is one of the most important units of the CUET Biology Syllabus. The previous year's exam covered around 9 questions from this unit. Thus, using CUET mock tests and previous year's papers to practice is a score-boosting strategy. 

  • Heredity and Variation: Mendelian Inheritance, Deviations from Mendelism - Incomplete dominance, Co-dominance, Multiple alleles, Blood Group Inheritance, Pleiotropy; the Basic concept of polygenic inheritance; Chromosome theory of heredity; Chromosomes and genes; Sex determination–In humans, birds, and honeybees; Linkageandtransgression; Haemophilia and colour blindness are sex-related inherited conditions. Human Mendelian disorders – Thalassemia; human chromosomal disorders Down's syndrome; Turner's Klinefelter's syndromes.
  • The Molecular Basis of Heredity: DNA as genetic material subject to research; DNA and RNA structure; DNA packing; DNA replication; the central dogma; transcription, genetic code, translation; Lac Operon; the Human Genome and Genome Project; DNA fingerprinting.
  • Evolution: Origin of lifeBiological evolution and evidence for biological evolution (paleontological, comparative anatomy, embryological, and molecular evidence); Darwin's contribution and the modern synthetic theory of evolution; Mechanism of evolution– Variation (Mutation and Recombination) and Natural Selection with examples, kinds of natural selection; Geneflow and genetic drift; Hartley'sprinciple; Human Evolution; Adaptive Radiation


 

Unit III: Biology and Human Well-being

The CUET Biology syllabus for this unit includes 3 subtopics. The right CUET study plan will help you memorize this unit better. Don't forget to revise it regularly, as it has more short topics that must be fresh in your mind until the exam. 

  • Health and Illness: Pathogens; parasites that cause human disease (Malaria, Filariasis, Ascariasis, Typhoid, Pneumonia, the common cold, amoebiasis, and ringworm); Immunology fundamentals–vaccines; Cancer, HIV and AIDS; Adolescence and substance misuse.
  • Enhancing food production: Plant breeding, tissue culture, single-cell proteins, biofortification; apiculture and animal husbandry.
  • Microbes in human welfare: In-home food processing, industrial manufacturing, sewage treatment, and energy generation.

Unit IV: Biotechnology Applications

  • The fundamentals and procedures of biotechnology: Genetic engineering (Recombinant DNA technology).

  • Transgenic Animals: Biosafety issues- Biopiracy and patents.

Unit V: Ecology and Environment

With around 12 questions in the previous year's exam, this unit covers many important CUET Biology questions. If you work through the questions from the previous year, your self-assurance will increase, and you will better understand your capabilities and easily cover the CUET Biology syllabus. 

  • Organisms and environment: Habitat and niche with organisms and their surroundings; Population and environmental adjustments; Population interactions, including mutualism, competition, predation, and parasitism; Population characteristics, including growth, birth and death rates, and age distribution.
  • Ecosystems: Patterns, components, productivity, and disintegration of ecosystems, energy flow, number, biomass, and energy pyramids, cycles of nutrients (carbon and phosphorus), ecological succession, carbon fixation, pollination, and oxygen release are all examples of ecological services.
  • The conservation of biodiversity: The concept of Biodiversity, Biodiversity Patterns, the importance of Biodiversity, Biodiversity Loss, and conservation of biodiversity hotspots, endangered species, extinction, the Red Data Book, biosphere reserves, national parks, and sanctuaries are all included in this list.
  • Environmental issues: Air pollution and its control; water pollution and its control; agrochemicals and their impacts; solid waste management; radioactive waste management; the greenhouse effect and global warming; ozone depletion; and deforestation.

Can a Biology student apply for CUET?

You can apply for the exam if you meet the eligibility requirements. The eligibility requirements for all universities are listed below:

  • 10 + 2 in Science or its equivalent from any recognised board in India, with Biology as one of the optional subjects,
  • A score of at least 50% or its equivalent grade in the aggregate for the General category
  • A score of at least 45% or its equivalent grade for the SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories.
