UGC NET Law: Eligibility Criteria 

For Assistant Professor

To be eligible for the UGC NET 2025 Law exam, candidates must meet the following criteria:

General, Unreserved, and General-EWS Candidates

• Candidates must have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC.
• The applicable fields include humanities and social science (including languages), computer science and applications, and electronic science.

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender Candidates

• These candidates need a minimum of 50% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s degrees or equivalent examinations to be eligible.
• The degrees must be from UGC-recognized universities or institutions.

Ongoing Master's Degree or Awaiting Results

• Candidates who are in the final year of their Master's degree or are awaiting their results can apply.
• However, they must complete their Master's degree with the required percentage marks (55% for general and 50% for reserved categories) within two years from the date of the NET result, failing which they will be disqualified.

Third Gender Category

• Candidates of the third gender receive the same benefits regarding fee, age, and other eligibility criteria, such as SC, ST, and PwD categories.

Ph.D. Degree Holders

• Candidates who completed their Master’s degree by 19 September 1991 are eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (from 55% to 50%) for appearing in the NET.

• The same eligibility conditions as UGC NET Law apply, with an additional age criterion:
• Candidates must be 30 years or below to qualify for JRF (relaxation of up to 5 years for OBC, SC, ST, PwD, and female candidates).
• Candidates should have secured at least 55% marks in their Master’s degree in Law (50% for reserved categories).

UGC NET Law: 2025 Exam Pattern

The UGC NET LAW 2025 Exam & UGC NET JRF Law exam pattern remains same and comprises two computer-based papers featuring objective-type, multiple-choice questions.

The papers are designed to be taken consecutively with no break in between.

Paper I:

• Marks: Paper I is allotted a total of 100 marks.
• Number of Questions: This paper consists of 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
• Purpose: The primary goal of Paper I is to assess candidates' teaching and research aptitude.
• Content: Questions in Paper I evaluate skills such as reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.
• Duration: Candidates have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete Paper I.
• Compulsory Questions: All 50 questions in Paper I are mandatory to attempt.

Paper II:

• Marks: Paper II is more weighted, carrying 200 marks.
• Number of Questions: This paper features 100 MCQs.

• There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
• Unanswered or unattempted questions will not receive any marks.
• To answer a question, candidates must select one correct option.
• If a question is incorrect or ambiguous and eventually dropped, candidates who attempted it will receive two marks. This could occur due to human or technical errors.
